What about local culture?

source: Hofstede Insights

Russia:
Locals don't speak english. So learning russian is really something important to do before going.

The communism area has left many traces and a spirit in the actual Russian culture. From that, they still are very slow, specially in administrations.
People have the reputaion to be "cold" because they don't smile often, if you are not their friends yet they don't bother being nice. Students that have been in Moscou say that people are rude and impolites.
The food in Russia is quite rich: soup, cabbage, starchy food, meats, fishes, a lot of viennoiseries (salty and sugary), chocolate and ice cream. And of course vodka is a the most popular drink.
Running water, however, is not drinkable.

During winter people usually go ice staking, play ice hockey and football is very popular.
